An All-In-One Enrichment Program by PrepWorks
Imparting essential skills needed to thrive at top schools, universities and beyond namely Critical Thinking, Speaking, Reading and Writing. A great program to bridge the gap between Chinese School and International School, as well as International School and Boarding School abroad! 4 key areas of focus will be on critical thinking, speaking, critical reading and writing:
- Critical thinking is a skill used in every subject and is the basis of developing a child’s ability to make independent assessments in a rational and unbiased evaluation of factual evidence.
- Speaking is the art of communicating effectively and is a key factor in determining one’s future success in both academic and career choices as children learn to get their message across in concise and engaging ways.
- Critical reading is a crucial skill that seems to be getting lost as young people become more engrossed in video and 3D displays, yet it remains a significant means of expanding a child’s horizons by developing new perspectives.
- Writing is a core component in the educational process that can be tremendously beneficial and exciting to children if they are shown creative, fun and relevant means to express themselves through language in dynamic ways that utilise the above 3 skills.
After 4 years of sending classes of successful students to top schools and universities (67% success rate into Oxford and Cambridge university, 2019 stats), PrepWorks tutors have identified the components for students to excel and incorporated all these “success factors” into a comprehensive enrichment program, reaching out to younger students to prepare them from an earlier age. StarWorks is a forward-thinking program aspiring to instill essential skills students need to be successful in tomorrow’s ever-changing landscape. StarWorks aims to prepare promising students to thrive at all academic challenges including competing for prized spots at global-ranking boarding schools and universities.
Students now have the opportunity to proactively hone these skills from young instead of leaving it to chance or stressing over admissions at the last minute.
Students will also stay up-to-date with current affairs as our English specialists use the award-winning British National Young Readers’ Newspaper, First News, read by over 2.2 million students and adults, as one of our primary resources. We firmly believe in igniting the love of reading in early learners through engaging, interesting and current topics, and what better way than introducing regular reading of a newspaper specially written for kids. PrepWorks is one of the few Malaysian companies to subscribe to First News and all StarWorks students will receive a weekly copy.
The following are the skills focused on in the StarWorks program:
Critical Thinking is the objective analysis of facts to form a judgment. The subject is complex, and several different definitions exist, which generally include the rational, skeptical, unbiased analysis, or evaluation of factual evidence. It is a skill used throughout every subject, however, it forms the basis of independent thinking and enquiry in contrast to rote-learning, and is at the core of Oxbridge interviews, especially since the situation demands not necessarily the correct answer but your thought processes in answering the question. This will be taught through the news articles where students will learn to critically think about the social and physical impact of the news on the world around them as well as possible solutions for the future.
Speaking or the art of communicating effectively and engagingly is key to success in academia and beyond. As Warren Buffet put it, public speaking is the “single greatest skill” to boost one’s performance and career, to gain trust and to put forth and convince others of ground-breaking ideas in a formal setting – or even just plain getting along with others in terms of social skills! In every session, a short speaking or presentation exercise will be incorporated into the lesson plan in order for students to practice their interpersonal and communication skills to teachers and peers, around thoughtful, current and age-relevant topics affecting today’s society based on the “First News” kid’s newspapers.
As Ayn Rand said, “Words are a lens to focus one’s mind,” and this is especially useful for young learners in today’s world who are often easily distracted by the myriad of exciting technologies. Thus, the written word becomes evermore significant even as its appeal seems to diminish among youth, who may need some encouragement and help in identifying interesting reading materials before they learn to fully appreciate the wonderful worlds that literature can open up for them. Strong reading abilities open up brand new horizons for young minds in a way that other mediums simply cannot achieve. Through improved depth in reading skills and a broader scope of interests, students will be exposed to new perspectives. With the First News kids newspaper, they can develop a richer appreciation for varied topics that allows them to analyse, write and converse with greater insight.
Boosting writing skills by utilising creative tasks and fun topics provides students with an endless canvas upon which to present an array of thoughts, ideas and emotions. Writing is tremendously important not just for excelling at their schooling process, but as a means of cultivating new viewpoints, mapping out future plans and simply for artistic self-expression. Other core learning components such as logical, numerical, spatial, interpersonal and verbal skills can be properly articulated when writing abilities have been fully developed. Thus, honing their linguistic abilities from a young age gives students greater confidence to embark upon a wider array of educational endeavours and career paths and ensures they will be poised to take full advantage of their inherent talents, skills and interests.
