Why A-Levels? Benefits For University Entry
-
Universally Accepted by the Top Universities
A-Levels are accepted by the top universities in the world including:
- UK: Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, LSE
- USA: Harvard, Yale, Princeton (with strong A-Level results and SAT or ACT)
- Canada, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong
A-Levels are different from other pre-university programs because students really specialise deeply in 3-4 subjects, which is perfect for students with an academic focus.
Grading Requirements for Top Universities
University Typical A-Level Requirement Oxford/Cambridge A*A*A – AAA(varies by course) Imperial/LSE A*A*A – AAA Harvard/Yale Equivalent of AAA (converted from A-Levels) Pro Tips:
Targeting Oxbridge/G5? → Must take A-Levels, for example, prioritize A-Levels + subject tests (e.g. STEP Maths)
Budget-limited + mid-tier UK universities? → UK Foundation Programme may work
For US universities? → Accepted A-Levels but US applications are more complex (SAT + extracurriculars needed). Taking APs is a common strategy for applicants to competitive US universities, for example, A-Levels + SAT + 2 APs (e.g. AP Calculus)
-
Flexibility in Subject Choices
You have a choice of subjects for A-Levels and you can choose them according to what you want to study at university.
Medicine → Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics
Engineering → Physics, Mathematics, Further Mathematics
Economics → Mathematics, Economics, Business Studies
Pro Tips:
Some highly competitive university courses (such as Oxbridge Medicine), require certain A-Level subjects to be offered! It would be beneficial to speak to an education consultant specialising in overseas education regarding your options.
-
3. A Strong Base for Competitive Degrees
A-Levels are challenging and exam-based, preparing students in good stead for the expectations of elite universities. A-Level Mathematics and A-Level Further Mathematics are especially valued by STEM courses.
Where to Take A-Levels – Local or Abroad?
Malaysia International Schools:
Recognised by UK universities, but still grade-dependent (for example Oxford A*AA).
UK Boarding Schools:
Wider range of extracurricular and A level subjects versus other routes, higher quality of teaching in general and often provide better preparation for Oxbridge interviews.
Online A-Levels:
Only accepted where taken via accredited boards (i.e. Cambridge International).
While UK schools would provide more interview preparation, you don’t need to worry; educational consultants in Malaysia, like us, offer similar interview coaching in a comprehensive and effective way.
If you want your child to settle in quickly for a life in the UK and develop independence at an early age, we can help you find the ideal UK boarding school.
How to Maximise Your A-Level Success?
-
Choose the Right Subjects (Early!)
Your subject combination (the subjects you take) can make or break an application for a university.
✅ Recommended subjects for STEM: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
✅ Recommended subjects for humanities: History, English Literature, Economics
Ideal Subject Combinations (Suggestion):
Degree Must-Take Subjects Recommended Extras Medicine Chemistry + Biology Maths/Physics Engineering Maths + Physics Further Maths Economics Maths + Economics Further Maths/History ❌ Avoid “soft” subjects (e.g., General Studies) if planning on going to Oxbridge/Ivy League.
❌ Take overlapping subjects (e.g., Business + Economics for Cambridge Econ)\
Case Study: Malaysian student K. Lim (ISKL) received a Cambridge Engineering offer with AAA (Maths, Physics, Chem), while peers with Business Studies were rejected.

Aim for Top Grades (A*/A)
Oxbridge & Ivy Leagues expect mostly A*s or As for both A-levels and IGCSEs.
Weak AS-Level grades? Not a strong set of As at IGCSEs? You may consider to take a Foundation to Maximise your chances at A*AA min. requirement courses.
To ultimately achieve an exceptional academic outcome, you may consider online tutoring in Malaysia to assist with your academic journey.
